Myostatin: Double Muscling (DM) occurs frequently in the Texel breed but is not limited to only this breed. This phenotype is characterized by exaggerated overdevelopment of the muscles, especially those of the hindquarters.

Callipyge: This is an autosomal trait with abnormal increase in muscular tissue caused entirely by enlargement of existing cells. Callipyge lambs have superior feed efficiency, higher retail yield, reduced fat thickness, and reduced marbling, while carcass weight is not affected, but meat has consistently lower tenderness scores.
